By Ezelle Harris, Managing Director, Seabourne Logistics South Africa
Logistics has traditionally been a male-dominated industry, where leadership positions were largely occupied by men. But times are changing. Over the years, I have seen first-hand how women are reshaping the industry with their resilience, strategic thinking, and ability to drive meaningful change.
As the Managing Director of Seabourne Logistics South Africa, my journey has been one of determination, breaking barriers, and proving that leadership is not defined by gender but by capability and vision.
Navigating a Male-Dominated Industry
When I stepped into the logistics sector, I quickly realised that while skills and expertise are critical, confidence and perseverance are just as important. There were moments when I had to work harder to be taken seriously or to prove my worth in a room full of men.
But instead of seeing these challenges as roadblocks, I used them as motivation. I made it a point to lead with knowledge, to stay ahead of industry trends, and to ensure that my team was always delivering beyond expectations. Over time, respect is earned not by words but by consistent performance.
Why Gender Equality in Logistics Matters
Diversity in leadership brings different perspectives, fresh ideas, and better problem-solving approaches. Women bring a level of adaptability and collaboration that enhances the efficiency of operations. At Seabourne Logistics, we have seen the direct impact of having women in key positions—from warehousing and operations to business development and leadership.
Research has shown that companies with greater gender diversity perform better financially, have stronger team dynamics, and are more innovative in their approach. The logistics industry, with its constant evolution and need for agility, stands to benefit greatly from more women stepping into leadership roles.
Seabourne’s Commitment to Supporting Women
At Seabourne Logistics, we are intentional about empowering women in the workplace. Some of our initiatives include:
Creating Leadership Opportunities: We ensure that women are given opportunities to step into leadership roles and have access to mentorship and career development support.
- Skills Development: Investing in training programmes that equip women with the technical and managerial skills needed to thrive in logistics.
- Work-Life Balance Support: Understanding that many women juggle multiple responsibilities, we advocate for a workplace that supports flexibility where possible.
- A Culture of Inclusivity: Beyond policies, we foster an environment where women’s voices are heard, ideas are valued, and contributions are recognised.
Advice to Women in Logistics
To the women looking to build a career in logistics, my advice is simple:
- Know your worth: Do not let anyone make you feel less capable. Your knowledge, expertise, and contributions are valuable.
- Keep learning: Logistics is an industry that evolves rapidly. Stay ahead by continuously learning about new technologies, market trends, and supply chain innovations.
- Build a strong network: Surround yourself with mentors, allies, and a support system that encourages your growth.
- Be confident: Take up space, share your ideas, and do not be afraid to lead.
The Future is Female
The logistics sector is at a turning point, and women have an essential role to play in shaping its future. Companies that embrace gender diversity and actively create opportunities for women will not only thrive but set a new standard for the industry.
At Seabourne Logistics, we remain committed to fostering a workplace where women are not just present but empowered to lead.
As we celebrate Women’s Month, I encourage businesses across the industry to reflect on how they can do more to support and uplift women in logistics. The road ahead is promising, and together, we can create a more inclusive and dynamic industry.
